Rape of Nanking
Yesterday was the anniversary of the Rape of Nanking and saw a lot of horrific stories on how the Japanese massacred and raped the city's civilians.
http://www.nankingatrocities.net/Con...fession_03.htm Confessions of Soldiers: Rape and Pillage "Women were the main victims, indeed.... We would pick some sunny place, like around a storehouse for example, then make a screen by hanging up branches with leaves," answered Private Tadokoro Kozo of the 114th Division when interviewed by the Pacific War Research Group in 1971. "We would get a ticket called Sekken [Red Ticket], which had the company commander's stamp on, to wait for our turn with our loincloth off." "One day I was assigned a leader to kidnap women. When we showed up, all the women frantically ran off. It was hard to chase and catch them because we couldn't kill them yet." "There wasn't any soldier who didn't rape. After things were done, usually we killed them. We'd let the women go, they'd run off, and we'd shoot them from the back. We didn't want to leave any trouble behind. If the gendarmes found out, we would be tried by court-martial. So, although we didn't really want to kill them, we did it - though, in fact, there was hardly any gendarme in Nanjing. I served in Nanjing for about two months."89 Unlike the relentless mopping-up operations and the executions of the POWs that were in some cases recorded as a part of official military operations, the cases of rape naturally did not leave any documented evidence. As observed by the foreigners in the Safety Zone, however, without doubt many Japanese soldiers abducted Chinese women, sexually assaulted them and in many cases, in order to leave no evidence, they killed the victims after the acts. A poster to advertise Ianjo, or official brothels, on the North Chung Shan Road. "Chinese Beauties" "Designated by the Base Camp Authorities" "House of restful consolation" "At the No. 4 Hall for Japan-China friendship" "600 meters ahead from here along the bank of the stream" Although many former soldiers of the Imperial Army came forward to admit butchering Chinese captives and civilians in Nanking, many fewer veterans were willing to talk about their perpetration of rapes. In China many survivors of rapes began telling of their painful past in the last two decades, but probably a lot of rape victims have already passed away in the last 60 years, if not killed right after being molested. Theses conditions altogether make it rather hard today to grasp the scale of the violations of women committed by Japanese troops. However, the establishment of Ianjo, or official brothels (literally, "house of restful consolation,") in as early as late December 1937 by the Shanghai Expeditionary Force and the 10th Army, clearly indicates how desperate the Japanese government was to keep its troops away from raping and spreading venereal diseases among themselves. Today more than ten such institutions were known to have operated under the Japanese government in Nanking although the idea seemed to have had little effect in stopping the rape criminals for the first several weeks.90 Looting On the day the Japanese troops entered Nanjing, the wholesale looting that was initiated by the retreating Chinese troops significantly escalated to the level of what Tillman Durdin of the New York Times called "plundering of the entire city." Once gaining a control of a district, the Japanese soldiers broke into shops, houses and other buildings and took away anything they wanted. The commander of the 16th Division, Lieutenant General Nakajima Kesago, wrote in his diary on Dec. 19: When we enter, the houses have generally been rummaged in by the Chinese troops, and many things are gone. Nevertheless, the army soldiers rush to break in and loot, whether it is their assigned district or not. This tendency is especially true about the houses in suburban areas. After all, those impudent gain the most.... Although the plate stated "Division Headquarters," when I went into the building, every room had been ransacked including the government chairman's office. They [Japanese soldiers] took away everything, even the old displays.... Supervising the privates wouldn't be of much help since, to my surprise, even high-ranking officers are candidly being thieves.91 Click here to see how the Nanking Atrocities were depicted in the U.S. propaganda documentary, Frank Capra's The Battle of China (1944). (RealPlayer required) Nakajima himself was not at all the exception. Apparently he did not have any guilt about looting Chinese property. On January 23, 1938, when asked about the furniture in the Nationalist Government Building by Matsui Iwane, the commander-in-chief of the Central China Area Army, Nakajima replied, "What is the matter of taking furniture when we are taking over a country and taking away people's lives? No one is going to be pleased even though we leave it there."92 Nakajima was later found stealing Chiang Kai-shek's treasures such as rugs and paintings and sending them to Kyoto in 23 boxes when he was serving as the commander of the 4th Army in Manchuria.93 As typified by Nakajima's attitude toward plundering, even commissioned officers joined the lower ranking soldiers to ransack every building in Nanking. No one tried to abide by the international law on wartime requisition, according to which one had to pay in military currency or leave a kind of promissory note when commandeering any article that could be later exchanged into real currency. Most soldiers just looted things and robbed people without a word. As observed by foreign journalists and missionaries, many times the Japanese troops shot the Chinese who tried to stop the plundering or resisted while being robbed. Some soldiers left the notes supplied by the Army, but as an accounting officer of the 9th Division recalled, those notes were written with no faith, having such false names as "Commander of the Retreating Unit, Chiang Kai-shek," or simply stating, "Idiot!"94 As a consequence, when the Chinese refugees who survived the most intensive reign of terror for weeks finally went back home, there was absolutely nothing left for them to start over their normal lives again. It is recorded that as early as the beginning of January 1938, the Japanese Army encouraged Chinese people to start business, trade money and produce food as a way to restore order in the city, but they had no stock to begin with, no money to spend, and no livestock or grain to grow.95 Interview: Wang Weixing96 "We should put our emotional feelings aside when discussing the Nanjing Massacre between the two nations," says Wang Weixing. Interview by author on March 30, 2000. Wang Weixing is a historian at the Jiangsu Academy of Social Sciences. He is also a member of the Research Center of Nanjing Massacre by the Japanese Aggressors located in Nanjing Normal University. He has recently published an essay on the psychological backgrounds of the Japanese troops in Nanking. "There are four aspects we should always look at to understand why Japanese soldiers went on the rampage in Nanjing." "First, they were vindictive towards Chinese because of the large number of casualties in Shanghai and other places in China. They carried out reprisals against even ordinary citizens. For instance, one diary of a former soldier tells us that he avenged his brother's death in Northern China by killing many Chinese." "Second, they had to give absolute obedience. To Japanese soldiers it was a holy war. They were fighting for the Emperor. So they did whatever they were told to do. Considering that the massacres took place in many parts of the city during the same period of time by different groups or units of the Japanese troops, there must have been an order from the higher echelon of the Japanese Army." "Third, as a national policy, Japan was trying to be on a par with Europe and openly contemptuous of Asian countries. Their chauvinism as the Yamato race took a great role in their attitudes toward Chinese. They probably thought they could do whatever they want because they are superior to Chinese." "Lastly, it was an unexpectedly long war for Japanese soldiers. Japan took it for granted that the war in Shanghai would end soon. But in fact the war was long and drawn out. That made many soldiers mentally unstable. They were fierce, homesick, anxious and worn out. The only comfort and joy they could find was to murder prisoners of war and to rape women. It may sound strange but in a sense those criminal acts became their amusement...." "But it should be noted that although killing prisoners of war was an order, the way to kill them depended solely on individual soldiers. I am against the idea to emphasize the insanity of the Japanese troops by pointing out grotesque ways of murder such as eating up internal organs, etc. There is no evidence to prove such things happened, at least not in Nanjing."

I had the opportunity to speak with a few eye witness... One reportedly saw that after the woman was raped, the throw her into the burning fire, with a stick poked into her. Another reported that at road junctions. many men stopped motorist who tried to run away, obviously targeting the woman. Those who are Chinese are taken to be raped. Those who are covering their face( muslim), had to be checked if they are Chinese. Of cos, there is a famous story going around in internet, of an account of a gal who was beaten and raped, her sister raped n killed, and father and mother beaten. Where they suppose to be in a safe building in Jakarta. There are some village, where the Chinese took up arms to defend themselves. The gals are reportedly locked in a house, each armed with a stick. The men took to guard the roads, until the whole ordeal died down. Those who tried to be funny, they beat and chase them away. Most other accounts are those on their house being burn down, and ran away, from Medan to penang or to singapore. The richer ones hired the army to escort them away. Some had information and ran away a week before the riot came. It was a planned riot to create confusion admid a power struggle. Some accounts I heard of are Chinese who are darker in appearance fake their ways out of situations. Some lost everything. Some neighbours who are kind took the Chinese in, as they know they would be in trouble if they don't help. Obviously, those who are proud, arrogant, and bastard did not receive much help.

Re: Rape of Nanking
Agreed Bro, rape by soldiers is almost as old as the history (written) of warfare itself. Commanders would let their men rape after winning to incite fear to the enemies, and to enjoy the spoils of war.
To be very objective (I'm Singaporean Chinese), what the Japs did was nothing unusual, meaning yes if the ISIL/ISIS come to fight and win, it is to be expected, they will rape our women. Although some local guys will disagree (and call it a waste of time) but I'm actually quite happy to have gone through NS for 2.5 yrs where at least we did receive a bit of training to survive (worst come to worst, I see a rifle on the ground I can more or less figure out how to use it, since we do not live in a country where we have the right to bear arms). |

Re: Rape of Nanking
Mankind has been killing one another for the longest time and the weak are always the victims such as women, old & children.
Let's all pray that our immediate families will not suffer such calamity in our lifetime. I wouldn't blame those Koreans, Chinese & others who mocked at Japan for Fukushima. Although totally different circumstances but we have to understand that Korea, Taiwan & nearly half of China was conquered/colonised by the Japanese Imperial army for decades and much atrocities were committed beyond our imagination. I have Korean friends who still bear hatred on Japanese up till today. And how about the Japanese Unit 731 bio-chemical warfare division that did human experiments? The commander Shiro Iishi was spared trial for War crimes & kept by Americans for intelligence purpose. Over ten thousand people died in the facility under his charge and half a million Chinese due to germ warfare. Some said that Agent Orange used in Vietnam was a by product of that legacy so are the Americans any better? Sorry for deviating from the thread title & I have evidences of orig. WW2 period Japanese military propaganda bulletins that have photos of Nanking incident showing raped & murdered victims, if anyone is interested. The author Iris Chang, who wrote the book, Rape of Nanking went into heavy depression and finally committed suicide. |

I love history and it is known as written in blood. Then it should not happen again and fair enough, many countries set up NS after WW2. Thats a fact but lets face the true if you could accept it.
I have spoken with male PRCs and in their evil mind, given a chance they will start WW3 because PRC has the most powerful army in the world. I doubt so still this is in the chairman's education. Future forward as much as this part of dark history that lives in our heart. We should be alert to this group of people. |

Re: Rape of Nanking
On top of paying little compensation n nt being remorseful compared 2 t Germans, t Japanese downplayed it even deny a very brutal incident.
Of cos in war, atrocitys happens. But in t 20th century, they went beyond atrocities. It was an orgy n weeks or months if raping n murder. I recall they ran out of women n raped grandmas n boys or men too N comparing to t middle ages where t huns chop off all men's hands n enslave t entire population is no comparison at all

Re: Rape of Nanking
Nobody wins in a war.
Let's hope our generation will not need to experience or go through one. Bro iwantbustykim, About your question whether Singapore will fall, It's highly unlikely any country would want to invade us outright, definitely not in today's time and age. We are a small country, in terms of resources, we have none. We have no oil, no gold, no diamonds, nothing. ![]() Play game usually if the place no resources, won't invade one. haha What we have, is plenty of men and women who loves this country. Regular guys on the street who on one hand can criticise the government, but will not hesitate to take up arms and fight should the need arises. I'm not from the military but i personally feel that that we're pretty low profile in terms of showing off what our armed forces can do. Yes there's the regular annual drills, yada yada yada.... and all the wayang shows everyone likes to say our army is putting on but is that really the case ? I think 1 good example would be the humanitarian aid we sent to our neighbours back in 2004 when the Tsunami struck. We responded with 1 of the largest force within the shortest time. We have people mobilised and en route to within 24 hours. We built landing sites at the beach, helicopter landing sites, telecommunication infrastructure all within a short period of time. It shows we care, as a nation, we want to help. We can help, we will help, which was why we did what we did. Coming from another perspective, i think it's a very polite and subtle way of telling some of our neighbours who might entertain some funny ideas from time to time, " We are nice....., but don't fuck with us. I can be at your doorstep before you know it " ![]() Just my personal 2 cents. Disclaimer : I still grumble about my ICT, i hate my Ippt, and i would be the first to curse and swear if there's any mob, but end of the day, i'm a Singaporean. We do what we have to do. It doesn't matter which political party you support, when the time comes.... we all fight for the same flag. |

Re: Rape of Nanking
Women rape men too, then how to justify?
Men deprive of regular sexual release get no comfort at home, if got money, still can go find prostitutes, no money but need to release how? R A P E is the answer. Unless if like me, I would DIY and be done with it.
